rebekah on "Should there be a playing football team this year?"

When Delhi High School was new and just starting to organize a football team, the stands were empty. They played games at odd times. The team was small. They lost. They lost pretty much every game. There were a few faithful fans who went to every game. They stayed loyal to the hometown team and still go to games today. I remember being bundled up on a cold, wet, rainy Saturday morning taking photos of one of those early football games. There is always hope.

Personally, I think it would ultimately be more demoralizing and cause more future problems if they did not at least attempt to play the games they have scheduled this year. The team grew and strengthened from a small team everyone expected to lose and became a powerhouse even going to the playoffs. It happened before and it can happen again. I think that saying that they are promised to lose every game is a little too defeatist. On any given Friday night, any given team can win. They may have to work harder than other teams, but I believe they should stay the course. I hope the fans will hang in there with them. We should give our support not only to the players but to the new coaching staff. This team has essentially been abandoned and the new coaching staff came on board and will do their best. That in itself is worthy of our support.

No one ever suggests the Raiders or 49ers call their season because they are assured of a losing season. Professional teams have losing seasons all the time. There are some professional sports teams that are notorious losers and yet, their fans remain loyal. I believe we should do the same.

Go Hawks!

Perhaps this week I will start wearing my Hawk Pride bracelets again to help do my part to show that I support our team and I am not a fair-weathered fan (or reporter). Now, the question is...what does everyone else think and what will everyone else do?

We will greatly miss KC's and hope it opens again soon in a new location. It was the Friday lunch spot for many teachers at DHS and now they are having to eat and meet else where. The ownership was great in responding to problems and did their best to make it a welcoming and fun family environment.

We were just talking amongst ourselves and wondered out loud if Delhi HS should even be fielding a team with only 15 players. Loosing is pretty much a promised thing at this point. Wouldn't it be better to just practice the heck out of this team while trying to recruit more players? Isn't loosing all the time going to be demoralizing and cause the kids to not want to join a loosing football team? What are your thoughts?

How do you feel about what happened to KC's Pizza on Monday? What will you miss most? Do you hope they'll return? If so, why?

What is your favorite memory from KC's? Please fill us in on what and why.

I was very sad to watch as fire crews finished their work on putting out the fire at the local eatery. In fact, I was near tears and had to leave. I was at almost a complete loss for words (which as many will tell you is not something that happens often).

I loved the support KC's offered the community regardless of who the owner was at any given time. It was almost as if commitment to the community was built in to the owner role for the restaurant. We held historical society meetings there for awhile and I will remember them fondly. I especially enjoyed the Christmas party we had for the historical society there one year. Regardless of whether or not KC's opens again, regardless of whether or not the building is rebuilt...there are memories and photographs (among other things) that will never be replaced.

Thank you to Walter, Louie and Margrit, Flora, Greg, Albert and anyone I may have forgotten for your commitment to the community through KC's Pizza. There are especially many local youth who appreciate all you have done for them.

Did you attend Delhi's Independence Day celebration last night? It was wonderful to see so many people there together, having fun and enjoying the evening. As I pulled into the parking lot, I looked around and thought to myself, "This is the way it's supposed to be." It looked the way I always picture Fourth of July celebrations. A couple of people asked me why it was changed from the fourth to the third and I explained that the fireworks display cost less by being on the third and there have been budget concerns.

From talking with Robert Rodarte (outgoing chairman), it sounds as though the celebrations will continue with a new chairperson, but the community really needs to rally together to help keep this event going. The event is free with a small charge for parking. What are you willing and able to do to keep this event going?

What is your favorite part of the event? What did you think of last night's event? Tell us what you think!

There was an article about this in the April printed edition of the Delhi Express. Here I'm going to mention it more from a more personal perspective.

I am going to spend three weeks teaching English to a group of Spanish exchange students this summer. They arrive late on June 25 and will leave EARLY on July 17. For three weeks, they will take English classes in the morning with me. We will spend the afternoons on trips ranging from Columbia and Old Sac to the Vintage Fair Mall and Funworks. It will give the students an interesting taste of American culture and American/local history. There are also three all day excursions (one per week) to Yosemite, San Francisco and Santa Cruz. (Host families can be included in the excursions, if they want to be.) I'm really excited about this opportunity.

As the English teacher, I am also expected to lend support to the local co-ordinator. We still have a few students and the adult chaperon who need a place to stay. The students needing placement are all 16. The chaperon is 35. I would love to hear from anyone who might be interested in hosting someone. This is a tremendous opportunity. My parents hosted exchange students during the summer when I was a teenager and it was an awesome experience. So, if you or someone you know might be interested, please let me know ASAP. We need to have everyone placed by the end of the week. I will help you get in contact with our local co-ordinator. OR...I also have the host family application that I can get to you. If you still have the article and contact Andi directly, please let her know that you heard about this from me. Many thanks!

I hope everyone has a great week!

I was quite impressed with the quality of music the children played. I have attended several elementary school level band performances and have never before actually been able to tell what pieces where being performed. Usually the sound is something akin to torturing small animals…but I was pleasantly surprised this time. I have to offer my praise to the band and their teacher Miss Lynn Valerio for their outstanding performance. I cannot wait to watch these children improve as they grow in their musical abilities.
